The Scientific Research Council (SRC) and the Postal Corporation of Jamaica embarked on a programme to launch a series of Roving Exhibitions on Science and Technology (S&T) island wide, to sensitize the nation and popularize Science and Technology (S&T) among Jamaicans at all levels.

Objectives

  • To showcase SRC products and services
  • To sensitize and popularize Science and Technology among Jamaicans at all levels to the point where S&T becomes a topic for regular discussion among ordinary citizens

The Program was spearheaded by the Information Services Division.  Three (3) parishes were earmarked as a pilot project, namely, St Ann, St Elizabeth and St Thomas.

PHASE I

ST ANN

The first launch took place in St.  Ann at the Walkerswood Post Office on the morning of May 28, 2004 at 10:00am.  We then moved into Browns Town Post Office for the 2:30 p.m. launch.  Over one hundred and twenty guests including the Hon. Minister of Industry and Tourism, Aloun Ndombet Assamba attended.  Minister Assamba is the Member of Parliament for North East, St Ann.

ST ELIZABETH

The St Elizabeth launch was held on June 29 and 30, 2004 at the Malvern and Black River Post Offices respectively.  Approximately sixty school children and adults including Mr.  Donald Simpson, Councillor for the Division, attended the Malvern launch while a mixed balance of adults and children attended the Black River launch.  The Mayor of Black River, His Worship Councillor Franklyn Witter, Councillor Dorothy Buchanan and Councillor Kern Smalling were among the specially invited guests at Black River.

ST THOMAS

The Roving Exhibition moved into St Thomas on Thursday March 3, 2005.  The Trinityville Post Office was host to a very successful launch.  Students and teachers from a number of high schools in the parish and a number of farmers and housewives attended while curious onlookers stopped by.  The SRC Executive Director brought greetings while the Deputy Post Master General, Mrs Carolle Hainsley addressed the audience.

The Morant Bay launch saw over 58 guests attending including the guest speaker, Member of Parliament, Dr Fenton Ferguson. He challenged his constituents to make use of the opportunities that were presented to them.  He expressed his disappointment in not seeing many more persons from the constituency whom he believed, could benefit from the information on display.  The Deputy Post Master, Mrs Carolle Hainsley, brought greetings on behalf of the Postal Corporation.

Both Minister Ferguson and Deputy Post Master received gift baskets compliments of the SRC.

Prize-giving/Awards Ceremony

A special feature of the Roving Poster Exhibition is the competition segment.  Posters are left at each Post Office after the launch with questions.  Persons are invited to answer the questions.  After a period of 6-8 weeks, the answers are drawn from the box and the person with the first correct answer wins a prize.

The first prize-giving awards ceremony was held in St Ann at Walkerswood Post Office.  Two (2) students emerged winners.  Twelve (12) year old Anthony McLean from Walkerswood All-Age School and a 14 year old student from Westwood High, Nikeisha Wilson.

The prize giving awards ceremony for St Thomas took place on May 6, 2005.  A primary and a secondary school student emerged winners.  Shantell Bailey won from Trinityville Primary, while Carlyn Telfer from Morant Bay High School came out victorious.  The winners from St Elizabeth were Mrs Marva Snape, Black River and Miss Shelean Brown, Malvern.
